> ABOUT IF QUAKE

IF Quake is a recreation of id Software's Quake using the Inform programming language. Inform is a language for creating Interactive Fiction games, or simply IF.

IF games, if you've never seen one, are text adventures. Basically they're interactive novels. IF has a long and glorious history in the gaming industry, and the genre has produced lots of classics, most notably the Infocom library of games, which include the Zork series, The Lurking Horror, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Suspended, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and more (for more on Infocom, click here).

IF Quake isn't a port of the Quake engine (despite the April Fool's gag to the contrary), but it really is a playable recreation of Quake. In IF Quake, you walk through the exact same levels you do in the graphical version of the game, only instead of circle-strafing and firing at your enemies, you type commands like "ATTACK GRUNT WITH SHOTGUN".

IF Quake is a radical departure from the normal Quake experience, and it's been a great deal of fun for me to work on.

What are you waiting for? Download it yourself and give it a whirl! Directions for installing and running the game can be found on the download page of this site, while the FAQ is here to help you if you have difficulties running it. If you'd rather just look at screenshots, we've got those too.

IF Quake was written by jason bergman, and is in no way connected with id Software, Activision, or the forces of darkness. You will not sue. You will not sue. You will not sue.
